Introduction

The human brain has infinite creative potential. Just think about all the things we have achieved so far as a civilization. We have achieved ways to store data digitally and connect with people on the other side of the Earth. Our guest, Matthew Davies believes that everyone can hack into their creativity with some practice.

So, if you think you cannot be creative, think again. Everybody has a pool of creative ideas that are lying dormant inside their mind. They just need to learn how to tap into their mind and access that information.

The Ways

Here are some ways you can hack into your creativity –

1. Try to relax – Relaxing yourself is extremely important to boost your creative potential. When you are stressed, your mind can just shut down and go blank. No idea will pop up no matter how much you try. However, when you relax yourself, your subconscious mind takes over your conscious self and continuously spark creative ideas.

That is why when people slip into a daydreaming mode, they often see visuals which help them to solve a problem or get new ideas. Take a hot shower or a long walk in order to relax your mind and body.

2. Read an inspirational book – When you find yourself in a tough spot, try to read an inspirational book. These will not only inspire you but also help you to unleash your creativity as you will become more motivated than ever before. A best-selling book is a work of creativity. It is bound to spark some ideas in your mind which you have not thought of yet.

3. Try meditating – Meditation helps you to let go of stress and calm your mind. This creates an optimal mental condition to brainstorm or come up with new creative ideas. Meditation also allows you to explore and connect with parts of your brain which you cannot get access to normally. Thus, it allows you to communicate with your subconscious mind and gives you the tools to interpret the messages you receive from within yourself. Once you are able to do that, you can hack into your creativity anytime you want.

4. Put on different thinking hats – In 1985, doctor Edward de Bono published a book called the ‘Six Thinking Hats’. In it, he listed ways to exercise your brain and expand your creative potential. The exercise is simple – you have to put on different colored thinking hats which allows you to think in a different way. Since these are all metaphorical hats, you have to believe in the process in order to get rewarded.

Here is how the process works –

  • White Hat – Pay attention to the past and present data available. Then, attempt to bridge the gaps.
  • Red Hat – Trust your emotions and gut reaction. Use your intuition to find a solution to the problem.
  • Black Hat – Think critically and figure out all the ways which can corrupt the idea.
  • Yellow Hat – Think positively and consider all the benefits of the idea.
  • Green Hat – Don’t limit your thinking. Get creative and find alternative or unusual ways to find a solution.
  • Blue Hat – Think logically. Try to find a solution which you can implement in real life.

Conclusion

Matthew Davies believes that expressing yourself in a different medium can also help you to tap into your creative potential. So, if you normally write to express your ideas, try speaking and recording your voice.
